We walked a thin straight line although the future was wide
Multiplication made sense, but we were taught to divide
Stay on the boat the waves weren’t to ride
Forbidden thoughts were better to hide
But soon we swayed off the narrow path and the line grew wider
What was once in darkness soon became lighter
The passenger now the driver
More than apple in the cider
The path soon began to sway
Twists and turns to our dismay
The sun had more than one ray
The moon our favorite time to play
Different faces as we lay
So much more within a day
That our straight line could merely decay
But thoughts of our straight line would stay in our mine
Our time of bliss, love was sublime
Life had rhythm and life had rhyme
It was built on the divine
It was the chaos that opened our eyes
The truth smothered in the lies
The laughter muffled by the cries
Hope outweighed by the sighs
And so the watched became the spies
And we were strict, and we were stern
And we would teach so we could earn
Our once lost straight line to return
To save the others from the burn
We tied our line around our urn
As our mark for lessons learned
And for those to seek as they took their turn.
